Casting Workshop
MFFO Casting Workshop and Fishing Trip

The MFFO casting workshop and fishing trip at Fullers North Branch Outing Club (FNBOC) on
16 and 17 Sept is in the books as a successful event.  Don Bemus, Robin Custer, Michael
Rooney, Roger Perry, Richard Perry, Bill Schroer, John Long, and Larry Halford attended the
casting workshop and fished the Au Sable River for wild brook and brown trout.  Most of us
came early and stayed over making it a five day visit.  Regardless of when we came or when
we left everybody wanted to stay longer.  Fuller’s is an easy place to go to, but a hard place to
leave.

John Long from Northville, Mi was the workshop instructor and applied his considerable skills
and experience to beginner and experienced casters alike, achieving remarkable results.
John re-taught us casting basics, and introduced some advanced and new concepts he has
mastered.  He focuses on teaching how to get the most out your rod regardless of the distance
you need to cast.  Line management and accuracy are key components of his workshop.  John
is also a cane rod maker so we had plenty to talk about on the porch before and after the
workshop.

The North Branch is a wild brook trout fishery with the occasional brown taking up residence
under logs and in the deeper holes.  Fishing on dry flies was good and everyone caught fish.  I
landed more than a few very nice brook trout over ten inches with 20 and smaller BWOs.
Dragging a streamer through the right place can very often get you a chance to say hello to a
large brown.

Located on the North Branch of the Au Sable River FNBOC is a hundred plus year old fly
fishing lodge owned by the Fuller family.   The lodge is comfortable and you are made to feel
like you belong there.  Breakfast is included with your room and the meal is designed to get
you going for the day.

In addition to being a successful fishing trip and casting class, the workshop netted over
$400.00 to the club treasury.  Many thanks to the Fuller family for providing an excellent place
to have the event, and to the people who participated for supporting club activities.
